Marigold Appliquérs Chapter Welcomes Elly Sienkiewicz

Submitted by Victoria Gray and Zoe Albert of the Marigold Appliquérs.

Quaaout Lodge near Chase, BC Canada, on the Little Shuswap Lake, was the perfect fall setting for the Marigold Appliquérs to host five days of classes with Elly Sienkiewicz. Over 100 appliquérs stitched baskets, wreaths, vases and urns filled with flowers and fruit in a variety of fabrics including cotton, silk and Ultrasuede®. Elly guided the classes through the making of ruched roses, folded buds, wired ribbon leaves and flowers and the narrowest of bias stems. A highlight, learned in the Splendid Theorem class, was shading using oil-based pastels to give realistic shape and plumpness to appliqué motifs.

On Lecture night, to a great audience Elly’s outstanding and continuing promotion of and contribution to appliqué around the world, was honoured with a Certificate of Appreciation from The Appliqué Society, presented by Zoë Albert representing TAS.

The additional presentation of ‘Friendships Offering to Elly, was the grand finale! This quilt top, made by all who had taken Elly’s classes in Calgary in 2007 will be part of yet another Baltimore Revival in 2010!

Elly touched the hearts of all who attended the workshops and lecture! Her gracious manner and genuine warmth prevailed as she signed hundreds of copies of her books and scripted personal passages to remember our special time. In Elly’s words, “A Stitching Sleepover”.

Elly Sienkiewicz pictured here with her TAS award, bouquet of Flowers and
also the package containing the gift of friendship from the past students of
2007, Calgary. The quilt in the package is "Friendships Offering" designed
by Sandra Rochon, Calgary, AB Alternate Maple leaf blocks designed by Elinor
Burwash, Edmonton, AB.

Central Victoria Chapter in Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia
Holds First Meeting

By: Megan Carroll
Our fist meeting was held on August 10 and was a HUGE success with 43 people
in attendance. (23 of whom were members.  So we picked up lots more
memberships and people are spreading the word!  Membership now stands at 41
with more applications coming in each week so I am expecting between 50 and
60 people at our second meeting, which will be held in November.  I have had
to find a larger venue in town to accommodate more people!

We were lucky to have Di Ford as our guest quilter.  Di is well known to
Australian quilters for her commercial patterns over the past 20 years
reproducing many antique appliqué quilts.  After a delicious shared lunch
at Threadbear, we enjoyed a sit and sew followed by show & tell.  I
received a lot of positive feedback on the day and since via email and
phone calls.  All in all, we're off to a great start.  There are more photos
on our blog - www.appliquesocietyaustralia.blogspot.com
Cheers
Megan.

Here is a good idea.

Ortonville Appliquers Demonstrate Applique at Local Quilt Show Cheryl Holland, Chapter Leader of the Ortonville Appliquers Chapter in Ortonville, MI reports...Yesterday and the day before, one of the groups that I belong to put on a quilt show. For the two days in question, I set up a small table in the back corner of the hall, surrounded by applique quilts and worked on a piece in progress. Two other members of the Ortonville TAS joined me as schedules permitted We had about 250 visitors at our little makeshift booth. We had lot of interest, and two guilds that expressed interest in having us come out and do a presentation at their meeting. One guild may even have us as their sole presenter at their trunk show next spring!
I am really excited!

The Apple Blossom Appliquers of New Minas, Nova Scotia Stitch Through the Winter and Spring Ruth Peskett and the ladies in their chapter wanted to share a photo of a baby quilt they made during the Winter and Spring. Ruth writes: (tm)The Apple Blossom appliquers of New Minas, Nova Scotia, really enjoyed getting together to make this cheery baby quilt for the annual Victorian Order of Nurses Quilt Auction. It was such a success that another one is planned for next year(tm)s auction!(tm)

The Des Moines Area (Iowa) Applique Society membership created blocks, constructed a quilt top and donated it to the 2004 6th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Auction held by the Des Moines Area Quilters Guild. Total receipts for the evening auction was $16,000. Congratulations to all the talented members of this TAS Chapter

The Maryland Chapter "On Pins and Needles" shares this photo from their October meeting.

Anne writes, " Since we meet on the 4th Thursday of every month, there are no meetings in November and December because of the holidays. We therefore have a party in October. The picture shows the finished quilt from our raffle 2 years ago. Everybody who contributed Halloween-themed squares received as many chances as they entered squares. We then picked one member's name out of a basket and she got to take all the squares home. She had the squares put together a year ago, but  the top still needed to be quilted. I'm very grateful to be the leader of such a fun group. Camaraderie is as important as exchanging tips, learning skills or sharing favorite books and magazines. Submitted by Anne Wilson

P.S. I'm the one on the left in the front row, with the dark long hair. Emily is the quilt owner, she's holding it and has a blue sweater on. Kim Engelke, who founded the chapter is the one behind the quilt, wearing glasses.
