To inspire some winter creativity in her region, Central Region Chapter Coordinator (RCC) Anne Peck created a contest with the theme “Fabulous Flowers.” She said they could be "funky, funny, frilly, or futuristic, or even faithfully floral! You choose!" and gave her chapters four months to create an entry. Quiltlets had size restrictions—no shorter than 12" on a side, no longer than 15"—and appliqué had to predominate. Quiltlet had to be done by a chapter member in good standing and be received by mid-February for judging. The results are in! Anne recruited a judge outside TAS for fairness; Louise Georgia, owner of the Quilted Fox in St Louis MO that has been hosting a TAS chapter, agreed to the challenge. There were nine entries: one from the Sho-Me Your Stitches chapter in Springfield, MO; two from the Nimble Needles chapter in Bryan/College Station, TX; and SIX from the Sugar Land chapter in Sugar Land, TX. The grand prize for “best of theme,” a $50 gift certificate to Keepsake Quilting, went to Valeta Hensley of Flemington, MO, for her "Roses Are Red??" The detailed work that went into this small quilt was breathtaking—the embroidery, the careful embellishment, the woven eighth-inch bias for the basket and center of the handle AND the impeccable hand quilting made it the big winner.
Any chapter wanting to host the traveling show of contest entries in 2009 must agree to fund a one-way shipment with appropriate insurance. Requests should be submitted to the RCC, Anne Peck, who will coordinate contest quilt availability. She can be reached by e-mail at atpeck@earthlink.net. It was a great contest and a delight to see so many special entries!
