The Appliqué Society – TAS – was founded by Anita M. Smith of Clinton,
Washington. In February of 1997 she mailed letters to over 100 quilt guilds in
Washington and some of the surrounding states to announce her plan for a new
organization devoted entirely to one area of quilting…appliqué.
Two months later, on April 26 an organizational meeting was held and welcomed 75
appliqué lovers. At that time volunteers formed a steering committee, and in
September 1997 the first newsletter was mailed and the first official meeting
was held. Since that time TAS has welcomed members from across the country and
around the world.
