Explore the beauty, symbolism, and craftsmanship of the historic Presentation Quilt—housed in The Metropolitan Museum of Art—through this focused two-part appliqué class. Using the quilt’s iconic center medallion, you’ll learn the techniques needed to recreate its exquisite elements: the delicate flower-filled basket encasing the Bible, the hovering dove, and the vibrant floral swags that surround the ornate basket. We’ll begin by studying the original medallion, analyzing the makers’ use of color, contrast, and fabric placement to create dimensionality in the flowers, basket, and motifs. You’ll learn how color choices influence depth and visual movement, and how to translate these insights into your own project.

You’ll receive practical, advanced needle-turn appliqué skills with an emphasis on:

  • Achieving crisp, clean sharp points
  • Turning smooth, elegant curves
  • Handling pointy points with control
  • Managing inverted V’s and valleys without frays
