This Baltimore Album block captures the emotional richness and symbolic storytelling that defined 19th-century women's needlework representing beauty, abundance, and domestic refinement — key values of the Victorian era.
At the center of the design is an ornate vase with a garland of blossoms that gently encircles a heart pierced by an arrow. This classic motif symbolizes being struck by love or deep emotion — a reference to Cupid’s arrow, representing romantic love, longing, or spiritual awakening. It reflects how 19th-century women expressed personal sentiments and moral ideals through fabric.
Under the heart and floral garland, you’ll find a pair of birds and doves in flight. These birds symbolize freedom, hope, and peace, while the dove, in particular, was often used to represent the Holy Spirit, as well as the soul’s journey and divine love.
This block, like many Baltimore Album designs, is more than decorative — it’s a visual diary, deeply embedded with social and personal values of the time: love, faith, home, and the emotional lives of women who rarely had a public voice. Through careful appliqué, each maker communicated her story, hopes, and beliefs in stitches that have lasted generations.
In this class, we’ll explore:
This project invites you to not only build technical skill but to connect with the rich emotional and symbolic heritage of 19th-century women’s art.
Patterns for this class must be ordered directly from Rita (they are not available digitally). See the supply list for details to order patterns and optional kits.
This “astonishing leap forward in quilting” (Bethanne Nemesh, White Arbor Quilting) has “redefined what a quilt is” (Cindy Seitz-Krug, Quintessential Quilting) and “started a whole new trend in the quilting world” (Luana Rubin, eQuilter.com). Now you can learn the technique that has captured the imagination of these quilting professionals and so many others!
In this class, you will learn how to make turned-edge appliqué shapes that are completely free-standing without a background. Each shape is a hand-sewn layered quilt with batting and backing, leaving the spaces between the shapes totally open. The Mahogany Rose circular block design can stand alone or be joined to others for a larger quilt.
An optional kit is available for purchase for CAD$16.99 at https://kathykwylie.com/product/mahogany-rose-kit/. Kit includes pre-cut interfacing templates for one Mahogany Rose block; 12-inch square of batting; and a printed copy of the instruction booklet handout. Orders must be received by November 1st, 2025 to allow time for shipping. Supply list
